EMERGENCY RESPONSE & POST-DISASTER RECONSTRUCTION PROGRAM
The tsunami disaster that devastated Aceh in late 2004 has prompted PEKKA to initiate emergency response activities and post-disaster reconstruction as a significant number of Pekka communities were severely affected. Based on this experience, PEKKA decided to develop a Community-Based Emergency Response and Post-Disaster Reconstruction Program that focuses on:
- Reviving productive economic activities as vital sources of livelihoods for women-headed households
- Providing decent housing for Pekka group members who lost their homes
- Opening access to education for children in temporary shelters who lost their parents and therefore their providers, at different levels of education
- Facilitating recovery and healing from trauma, grief, loneliness, fear and anxiety.
